Grace for Today

Fuel Your Faith: Biblical Insights for Daily Living

How much of today do we lose thinking about a day we can no longer change—or worrying about a day that hasn't even arrived?

Our minds have a way of traveling.

We replay yesterday's conversations. We revisit mistakes. We wonder what we should have done differently. Then, without warning, our thoughts race ahead to tomorrow. What if something goes wrong? What if things don't work out? How will I handle what might be coming?

Meanwhile, today is happening.

Jesus spoke directly to our tendency to live ahead of ourselves:

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”— Matthew 6:34

Jesus wasn't telling us never to make plans. Scripture encourages wisdom and preparation. He was teaching us not to carry tomorrow's burdens with today's strength.

Max Lucado captures that idea beautifully:

“Today, I will live today. Yesterday has passed. Tomorrow is not yet. I’m left with today. So, today, I will live today. Relive yesterday? No. I will learn from it. I will seek mercy for it. I will take joy in it. But I won’t live in it. The sun has set on yesterday. The sun has yet to rise on tomorrow. Worry about the future? To what gain? It deserves a glance, nothing more. I can’t change tomorrow until tomorrow. Today, I will live today. I will face today’s challenges with today’s strength. I will dance today’s waltz with today’s music. I will celebrate today’s opportunities with today’s hope. Today.”— Max Lucado, Anxious for Nothing: Finding Calm in a Chaotic World

There is freedom in realizing that God has not asked us to live three days at once.

Yesterday belongs to His mercy.

Tomorrow belongs to His sovereignty.

Today is where He has placed us.

When the Israelites traveled through the wilderness, God provided manna one day at a time. They weren't given a warehouse filled with enough food for the entire journey. Each morning, there was enough for that day.

Jesus taught us to pray the same way:

“Give us today our daily bread.”— Matthew 6:11

Daily bread.

Daily strength.

Daily mercy.

Daily grace.

God may not give you today everything you will need six months from now because you aren't living six months from now. But He promises to meet you here.

A Truth to Hold Onto

God gives us grace for the day we are actually living.

Yesterday may contain things you wish you could change. Learn from them. Receive God's forgiveness. Treasure the good. Then release yesterday into His hands.

Tomorrow may contain uncertainties you cannot answer. Prepare wisely where you can, pray about what concerns you, and entrust the rest to God.

Then come back to today.

There are people to love today.

There are prayers to pray today.

There is work worth doing today.

There are blessings worth noticing today.

And there is grace available for today.

Digging Deeper This Week

Spend time with these passages and notice how often Scripture draws our attention back to trusting God one day at a time:

  • Matthew 6:25–34 — Jesus teaches us not to be consumed by worry about tomorrow.

  • Lamentations 3:22–23 — God's mercies are new every morning.

  • Psalm 118:24 — This is the day the Lord has made.

  • Philippians 3:13–14 — Paul refuses to remain trapped by what is behind him.

  • Exodus 16:13–21 — God provides daily manna for His people in the wilderness.

Weekly Challenge: Be Present Today

For the next seven days, begin each morning with three simple questions:

1. What do I need to release from yesterday? Maybe it is regret, disappointment, anger or something you simply cannot change. Give it to God.

2. What am I borrowing from tomorrow? Identify the worry you've been carrying about something that hasn't happened. Pray about it, make whatever wise preparation you can and place the outcome in God's hands.

3. What has God given me today? Look for today's assignment and today's blessings. Who can you encourage? What needs your attention? Where can you see God's goodness?

Then pray:

“Lord, give me today's grace for today's life.”

A Prayer for the Week

Father, thank You for the gift of today. Help me stop living in moments that have already passed and worrying about moments that have not yet arrived. Give me wisdom to learn from yesterday without becoming trapped by it. Give me faith to entrust tomorrow to You without trying to control it. Open my eyes to the people, opportunities and blessings You have placed before me today. When today's challenges come, remind me that Your strength is sufficient. When today's joys come, help me slow down enough to receive them with gratitude. Teach me to walk with You one day, one decision and one moment at a time. In Jesus' name, Amen.
