The Greatest Among You

Morning Encouragement

In marriage, family life, and even church relationships, it is easy to become focused on who does more, who deserves recognition, or whose needs should come first.

But Jesus turned the world's understanding of greatness upside down.

He taught that true greatness is demonstrated through service.

Going Deeper: The Word "Minister"

The Greek word diakonos (διάκονος), translated "minister" in Matthew 20:26, refers to a servant or someone who serves others.

In the ancient world, positions of authority often brought privilege and public honor. Jesus challenged this understanding by teaching His followers that greatness in God's Kingdom is expressed through humble service.

What His Disciples Would Have Understood

Jesus gave this teaching after James and John sought positions of honor in His Kingdom.

The other disciples became indignant. They were still thinking about greatness in terms of status and authority.

Jesus pointed them toward His own example. The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve and give His life as a ransom.

This was a radical redefinition of leadership.

Breakfast for the Soul: In your home today, look for one opportunity to serve without expecting recognition. Remember that Christlike service is not one-sided; it calls each of us to humility and love.

Morning Prayer

Father, remove pride and selfish ambition from my heart. Teach me to love others through humble service. Help me recognize opportunities to encourage my spouse, family, and neighbors. May my actions reflect the servant heart of Jesus. Amen.

Scripture | Matthew 20:26–28 (KJV)

But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
